July 26, 2019 (Houston, Texas) – On Thursday, July 25, 2019 The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center hosted its annual “MD Anderson Day” at The John P. McGovern Museum of Health Medical Science. Staff and physicians from MD Anderson will provide attendees of The Health Museum with healthy living and wellness resources at no cost, as well as education materials on ways to reduce their cancer risks. This free event will take place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and coincides with The Health Museum’s Free Family Thursday, which is open to the public every Thursday.

“MD Anderson Day is a great example of our ongoing commitment to collaborate with world-renowned Texas Medical Center Institutions to bring the most impactful programming to our members and patrons,” said LaTanya Miles, Director of Education and Public Programs at The Health Museum. “MD Anderson is a valued Consortium Partner of The Health Museum, and we are proud to be working with them once again.”

Among the activities planned for the day are an interactive 15-foot-wide by 19-foot long by 13-foot-tall giant inflatable walk-through lungs display; an exhibit that demonstrates a healthy versus a diseased lung; a giant wall to sign and write messages to loved ones affected by cancer; anti-tobacco and cancer prevention information displays; a body composition scale; photo booths and a “Too Cool to Smoke” puppet show.

"MD Anderson Day is a good opportunity to educate people of all ages on simple things they can do to lower their risks of cancer," says Marisa Mir, program director at MD Anderson. "We hope attendees will be encouraged to make healthier lifestyle choices."

Attendees will also have access to The Health Museum’s permanent and traveling exhibitions, including Our Global Kitchen: Food, Nature, Culture. Organized by the American Museum of Natural History in New York, Our Global Kitchen: Food, Nature, Culture explores the complex and intricate food system that brings what we eat from farm to fork and considers how producers in the future might feed the Earth’s growing population. Large-format and interactive displays bring to life important global and cultural food ecosystems that affect our day-to-day relationship with food. The diets of iconic figures such as Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps and activist Mahatma Gandhi are also displayed as part of this exhibition, which will be at The Health Museum – Houston’s most interactive science and health learning center – through Sunday, October 20, 2019.
