Take a look at this vile, racist cartoon being circulated by mayoral candidate Tony Buzbee. What do you see?

What we see are two African Americans and two Latinos in a garbage truck.

One is Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. The mayor of the fourth-largest city in America? In a garbage truck?

Two are city department heads who happen to be Latino: Samuel Pena, Fire Department, and Art Acevedo, Police Department.

And, boy, did Buzbee go out of his way to include Press Secretary Mary Benton. What does she have to do with solid waste? We can only assume she was included because she’s African American and a woman.

Buzbee sent this despicable cartoon out on his social media accounts. Guess he wasn’t getting any traction from the dog whistle attacks against Mayor Turner. We editorialized about the racist tactics of Buzbee and Bill King in a previous editorial: Why are Tony Buzbee and Bill King attacking our Black elected officials?

In that editorial, we called out Buzbee and King for their attacks on Mayor Turner, whom they accuse of pay to play at City Hall. Despite their own serious problems with pay to play. Despite the fact that plenty of regulations are in place to prevent any such illegality. Despite the fact that Mayor Turner follows the same rules as previous mayors, including Annise Parker and Bill White--we didn’t hear Buzbee and King criticizing them. Stereotypical attack on an African American—they’re all corrupt, right?

Just like his buddy Donald Trump and his contemptable tweets against people of color, Buzbee has doubled down—from subtle dog whistle politics to an outright racist attack.

Is there nothing they won’t do to bring down Mayor Turner? A mayor who can count dozens of successes and positive programs to help Houstonians. A mayor who praises Houston’s diversity and inclusion. A mayor who has tackled longstanding issues that stymied previous mayors.

Buzbee has been getting away with dog whistle politics. Now he is emboldened to be upfront with his racism. Well, what else would you expect from a Trump fundraiser?
