Four Texas counties are among the top 25 in the nation identified as being most at risk for a measles outbreak, according to a new study. The findings by researchers at the University of Texas at Austin and John Hopkins University were published this week in The Lancet. Compiled data show Travis, Bexar, Harris and Tarrant counties are among the most vulnerable for an outbreak against a backdrop of increased cases. Since January 2019, there have been more than 700 confirmed measles cases in 22 states — nearly double the amount of last year and the highest number reported since the virus supposedly was eradicated in the United States in 2000, according to the study. Twenty-five counties across the country have been identified to be most at risk for a measles outbreak due to low vaccination rates compounded by a high volume of international travel, according to the study.
