Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Francisco Cigarroa, M.D. to the Chronic Kidney Disease Task Force for a term at the pleasure of the Governor. Additionally, the Governor named him chair of the task force. The task force coordinates implementation of the state’s plan for prevention, early screening, diagnosis, and management of chronic kidney disease and educates health care professionals.

Francisco Cigarroa, M.D. of San Antonio is the Director of the Transplant Center at The University of Texas (UT) Health Science Center at San Antonio and a transplant surgeon. Previously, he served as Chancellor of the UT System and as President of the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio. President George W. Bush appointed him to serve on the President’s Committee on the National Medal of Science. He is a member of the National Organ Board Review for the United Network for Organ Sharing, American Society of Transplant Surgeons, National Academy of Medicine, Council of Foreign Relations, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Southern Surgical Association, and the American Surgical Association. He is chair of the Ford Foundation and a member of the Alamo Endowment Foundation. Cigarroa received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Yale University and a Doctor of Medicine from UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. He completed fellowships in pediatric surgery and transplant surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
