Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget, issued this statement ahead of Game 1 of the World Series between the Houston Astros and the Washington Nationals:
“On Capitol Hill, hometown pride runs deep—and understandably so. As a senior member of the House of Representatives, it is my distinct honor to represent Houston and Harris County in the United States Congress. I have immense pride about all that goes on in Space City. And, when it comes to sports and America’s past time, folks in the Eighteenth Congressional District have much to celebrate. I am proud of all that the Houston Astros have achieved in this magical season, as we continue the march to take back the World Series title, after our 2017 reign. During the 2019 regular season, the Houston Astros won 107 games during the regular season. And, this season, despite the fact that the Astros won their third pennant—their second in the American League—Houston’s beloved Astros have a little bit of work to do to #takeitback, before they can hang up their cleats.
Tonight marks game 1 of the World Series and the Astros will be playing against the Washington Nationals. To mark the occasion, and earlier today on the House Floor, I engaged in a friendly wager with D.C.’s very own Eleanor Holmes Norton. As we root for our teams, we thought we’d make it interesting. If the Nationals win, Congresswoman Holmes Norton has asked that I come by her office and pose in a t-shirt advocating for D.C. Statehood. If the Astros win, Congresswoman Holmes Norton will come by my office, in her finest Astros orange, and pose with me. Let’s go Astros!”
