On Tuesday, April 7, 2020, Congressman Al Green joined Houston Independent School District (HISD) Interim Superintendent Dr. Grenita Lathan and the unsung heroes in distributing free curbside meals to students and families. Congressman Green released the following statement:
“During the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us have shown appreciation for the above and beyond service of our frontline medical professionals and first responders who consistently risk their lives to save our lives,” Congressman Green indicated following the Tuesday food distribution at Sterling High School, located in the Ninth Congressional District. “However, we are fortunate to have others on the front lines of this crisis working to ensure that we have an essential we cannot go without – food. From our neighborhood grocery stores to fast food restaurants and school districts providing free meals for pick-up, these workers are truly unsung heroes.”
Green continued, “With each shift, they risk their health and the health of their families to provide us with necessities. While I have made it a point to express my gratitude to these persons, today I was able to exhibit my sincere thanks by doing what we ask them to do. I joined the unsung heroes at Sterling High School in distributing curbside meals to students and families. I must thank HISD Superintendent Dr. Lathan for her steadfast leadership during this unprecedent time. I also all the brave workers who make this food distribution possible. Your commitment to meeting the needs of the people without formal recognition is admirable and offers an invaluable service to us all. Each of you is an unsung hero, and I salute you.”
Houston Independent School District (HISD) is under the leadership of Interim Superintendent Dr. Grenita Lathan. Dr. Lathan welcomed Congressman Green to Sterling High School to participate in the afternoon food distribution. Ahead of the distribution, she released the following statement:
