Is your smartphone your primary connection to the Internet or do you need a reliable backup for Wi-Fi? You’re not alone: T-Mobile says mobile hotspot usage on its network is up 60% as more people are staying and working from home.
Hotspots let you share your phone's high-speed network connection with other devices like laptops and tablets. Here’s how to set up a hotspot on your connected Apple iOS or Android device:
Let's begin with iPhones.
First, open “Settings,” then tap “Personal Hotspot.” Here, switch the toggle next to “Allow Others to Join” to turn on your hotspot. After turning this on, you will find the name of your hotspot under “To Connect Using Wi-Fi,” and the password next to “Wi-Fi Password.” If you tap on “Wi-Fi Password,” you can customize — of course! — your password. Enter this information on the other device to connect to your hotspot.
Now on Android.
This procedure should work for most Android devices. First, open “Settings,” tap “Connections” and select “Mobile Hotspot and Tethering.” Here, tap “Mobile Hotspot” and toggle the switch to on. Towards the bottom of the screen, you will see the name of your hotspot and the password needed to connect to your device. If you want to change the default settings, you can enter your preferred name or password.
For other devices, there may be a search bar within the settings app that you can use to locate the hotspot settings.
T-Mobile has temporarily added more network capacity and lifted data caps for all customers with limited data plans, and T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile customers on smartphone plans with hotspot data are receiving an extra 20GB of hotspot data through mid-May.
Now you’re ready to start using your hotspot.
