The Queen’s Six makes its Houston Early Music debut with a trilingual presentation of The Origins of Baroque Vocal Music at Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Ave., Houston, TX 77002, on Friday, April 14, 2020, at 7:30 p.m.

“We are excited to bring this extraordinary, world-traveling, early music ensemble to our Houston audience,” Executive Director Deborah Dunham said. “These talented, skilled vocalists are known for performances that range from Thomas Morley's 16th-century Arise, Awake to 20th-century pop culture tunes like Michael Jackson's Thriller.”

The Queen’s Six was originally formed in 2008 in celebration of the 450th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth I’s accession to the throne. Comprised of Windsor Castle-based St. George’s Chapel Choir lay, clerks, the current ensemble features Daniel Brittain and Timothy Carleston (countertenors), Nicholas Madden and Dominic Bland (tenors), and Andrew Thompson and Simon Whiteley (basses). The a cappella ensemble will showcase sacred and secular works by Italian, Spanish, Mexican and English composers in the Houston Early Music program.

“The Origins of Baroque Vocal Music charts the progress of European Renaissance music with regard to the political and musical upheavals of the time and shows how that music slowly became more florid and harmonically innovative,” said Whiteley. “The first half is all music from Italy, Spain, and Mexico, and the second half is all English. The English half includes a number of Elizabethan composers such as Tallis, Byrd, and Morley, as well as pieces by and related to Elizabeth I's father, King Henry VIII.”

THE QUEEN’S SIX will perform The Origins of Baroque Vocal Music at Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Ave., Houston, TX 77002, April 14, 2020, at 7:30 p.m.
