After retiring in 2005, author Charlie Seymour went on a six-month, mind-expanding road trip, on motorcycle, to Mexico. One of the few personal items he brought with him was his father Walt Seymour’s pocket diary, which he had kept when he took his own life-changing road trip at the age of 17, back in 1926. During his motorcycle trip, Charlie reflected on both his and his father’s road trips, intrigued by the way “road trips” related to life-changing events, Walt's journey in 1926 in response to his graduation from high school; and Charlie's in 2005, in response to his retirement. Fascinated with the possibilities of reliving his father’s experience, Charlie decided his next trip would be to retrace the route his father traveled in 1926, to keep his own diary and to discover what the two diaries, side by side, might reveal.
The route started in Madison, Wisconsin, north to Canada, west across Canada to Vancouver, then south along the Pacific coast, through Washington, Oregon and California to Mexico and, then, returned to Madison via the Grand Canyon. Walt traveled by train and hitch-hiking; Charlie traveled in a 30-year-old RV, his first taste of the RV lifestyle.
