In another proactive move to safeguard citizens during the ongoing COVID-19 public health crisis, Missouri City officials have cancelled the 2020 Fourth of July Celebration festivities, including the annual fireworks show.

“This decision was made in alignment with community safety guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as state and local officials,” said Mayor Yolanda Ford. “The City’s July 4th festival attracts thousands of visitors from across the region and, at this time, events that draw large groups of people in public places are being cancelled or postponed to minimize the spread of COVID-19.”

Residents continuously rank Parks initiatives as a contributing factor to the high quality-of-life in Missouri City, and in the 2020 Community Survey, 77 percent of respondents said they were satisfied with Parks & Recreation programs and facilities.

“The Fourth of July Celebration is one of our most popular recreation events and it is an opportunity for everyone who attends to enjoy our pristine parks and to have some patriotic fun,” said Parks & Recreation Director Jason Mangum. “It’s unfortunate that Missouri City and other area communities will not host Independence Day events this year, however at this time, public safety is the top priority.”
