Pastor John Gray, Senior Pastor of Relentless Church, continued the series A Necessary Conversation this week with Lakewood Church Pastor Joel Osteen. Held in response to the tragic killing of George Floyd and global civil unrest, the discussion on racism, social injustice and the role of the church follows last week’s discussion on race with Pastor John Gray and Elevation Church's Pastor Steven Furtick.
“Churches need to respond in real time to systemic injustices they see within their communities to bring solutions,” said Pastor John Gray during the first segment of the series. “George Floyd dying on TV with a knee on his neck was our Emmett Till moment where we see the brutality and the lack of humanity that we can literally not ignore any longer.”
During the conversation, Pastor Gray recounted a time in which he was approached by police officers in his own driveway in Houston. “In this chair, I’m not just John who serves your vision,” he said to Pastor Osteen. “I’m John who lives as a black man.”
In addition to his role as Senior Pastor at Relentless Church, Pastor John also serves as an Associate Pastor at Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, where he has served in various capacities for over eight years. Last week, Pastors Osteen and Gray attended a peaceful protest together in Houston and discussed racial injustice on Joel Osteen Radio (SiriusXM 128). Pastor Gray additionally held a multi-faith rally in Greenville, South Carolina.
“It’s an extremely difficult time. We’re here to seek understanding as there are a lot of wrongs in the world” said Pastor Osteen during the broadcast. “This isn’t a political issue, but a human issue.”
