The Supreme Court delivered a huge win for LGBTQ rights by ruling that federal civil rights law protects gay, lesbian and transgender workers.

The opinion, written by Justice Neil Gorsuch, argues, “An employer who fires an individual for being homosexual or transgender fires that person for traits or actions it would not have questioned in mem-

bers of a different sex. Sex plays a necessary and undisguisable role in the de- cision, exactly what Title VII forbids.” The landmark 6-3 ruling yesterday will extend protections to millions of workers. It’s also a clear rebuke of the White House’s recent attempts to cut into LGBTQ protections.
