On Friday, June 26, 2020, Congressman Al Green released the following statement supporting and commending the passage of H.R. 51, the Washington, D.C. Admission Act. Congressman Green is a proud supporter of D.C. statehood and serves as an original cosponsor for this legislation:

“Today I celebrate the historic passage of the Washington, D.C. Admission Act in the House of Representatives with my colleague Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton – who sits at the helm of this movement – as well as the residents of Washington, D.C.,” stated Congressman Al Green. “President Abraham Lincoln told us democracy is a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. However, without full representation extended to the residents of Washington, D.C., who have our nation’s Capitol within their view, President Lincoln’s sentiments do not ring true. H.R. 51 extends D.C. residents the long overdue opportunity to have a voting voice in Congress and for our nation to make good on the words of our 16th president.”

Congressman Green added, “D.C. residents have paid taxes, fought and died in American wars, and contributed to our democracy by working as staffers on Capitol Hill as well as various federal agencies, yet they have been deprived of the freedoms their tax dollars, sacrifices, and work products have fought to protect. Statehood is the only remedy that will provide full and fair representation for D.C. in Congress. I look forward to this measure progressing to the Senate and to the President’s desk, as well as to the day that D.C. has a voting representative and senators, rather than a delegate.”
