HISD Helping Hands

Style Magazine Newswire | 3/16/2020, 9:29 p.m.

Dear HISD Community:

As we navigate uncharted territory with the impact of COVID-19, HISD is fully committed to supporting our students and families in need.

Through a partnership with the Houston Food Bank School Market Program, we are starting Spring Break off with expanded food distribution sites at 36 schools throughout the district – an increase from our initial six sites. The expansion is due to overwhelming demand on March 14 at Chavez High School, our initial pilot site.

As we provide these services, it’s important that we are doing so in a safe manner that promotes the health and well-being of our families. Starting today, we are implementing curbside pickup and social distancing measures. Families who arrive on foot will be required to stand six feet apart in line. HISD Police and staff volunteers will be on site to enforce these rules and help with crowd control.

I am proud to lead a district that puts families first during challenging times. Though this is technically Spring Break, employees are hard at work across the district, from developing academic contingency plans to staffing our food distribution sites. Be sure to stay informed at HoustonISD.org/HealthAlerts.

I want to thank our volunteers for making this effort possible. We are in this together!

Sincerely,

Grenita F. Lathan, Ph.D.

HISD Interim Superintendent
