In response to the news that Civil Rights Leader Rev. Joseph Lowery, has died at 98, Rev. Timothy McDonald, co-chair of the African American Ministers in Action program at People For the American Way, released the following statement:

“The Rev. Dr. Joseph Lowery was the dean of the Civil Rights Movement, and a friend and mentor to generations of activists. He truly did 'act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with his God.' It is a great and humbling honor that he called me one of his sons, and a great responsibility to continue his life’s work to make 'justice for all' a reality, not just a promise, in this country. People For the American Way and the members of its African American Ministers in Action will keep Dr. Lowery’s memory in our hearts, his wisdom on our minds, and his prophetic words on our lips as we put our hands and feet to the work before us. Rest in peace, beloved brother.”
