PVAMU secures $110K emergency grant for graduating seniors amid COVID-19 crisis

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded Prairie View A&M University a $110,000 emergency grant to provide relief for seniors on the verge of graduating who have suffered economic hardships due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The funds will be capped at $1,000 per student and will be disbursed to eligible students over a 12-month period. To qualify for the funding, students must be seniors enrolled in the spring 2020 semester, who only need 12 semester credit hours or less to graduate. A PVAMU committee will assess and prioritize applications and disseminate funds to those most in need.

“In these uncertain times, the support of academic partners like the Andrew Mellon Foundation is extremely important in easing the anxiety our young scholars may be facing,” said PVAMU President Ruth J. Simmons. “The Mellon Foundation’s award allows Prairie View A&M University to continue supporting our students from matriculation through graduation.”

“We know that students and their families will face enormous hurdles because of this global health crisis. We are grateful that the Mellon Foundation has stepped in to assist those students who are nearing graduation, yet are desperately in need of assistance to complete their studies,” said James M. Palmer, provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs.
