Yesterday Texas Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee was a guest on SiriusXM’s “The Laura Coates Show” discussed the House’s vote to remove Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene from congress and said “this is not about Democrats or Republicans.”
During the interview, Lee told Coates: “We have to show the world that in spite of what happened on January 6th, our democracy has not been extinguished. We have not taken a step back from being vigilant in protecting the constitution, and being aggressive in saying that this will not be tolerated. This is not in violation of the Bill of Rights. This is not free speech. This is violence against the United States and to stop violence against the United States today we'll take an action simply to remove her from the committees that deal with children, education and labor. Take her away from the committees that are dealing with children. And so I wish the leadership of the Republican party had done their job, but Americans are looking to Democrats to act on behalf of Americans, not partisan participatory democracy, but democracy that relates to all of Americans. I don't think this particular congress person who has been elected by our district, and that is their privilege, but it is not the privilege for her in and under the rules of the house to attack individual members, to create an atmosphere of violence and to be able to spew out right untruth on the floor of the house, and in her social media, which continues to get worse and worse.
There is no doubt, even this morning in meetings it was affirmed that this is not about Republicans or Democrats. This is about a member of the United States Congress, and whether they were in one party of the other, Democrat or Republican, Independent or otherwise, any actions that provoked violence, that spoke to violence against a member, spoke to violence against leadership, indicated shooting someone in the head and talking about the destruction or being a predator against children, complete lies and untrue, or someone seen stalking a victim of school shootings, taunting them while carrying a gun, any member that chooses to act in that way, and again, as I said, Laura chooses to not take the oath seriously that says, defend this nation against enemies foreign and domestic, they would also be subjected to the punishment of the house, and that would certainly be determined for what they may have done. But the level that this occurred at, it is certainly appropriate that she not be on committees that in fact has the trust of the American people and to be trusted to do their work. I would hope that she would go to the floor of the house, we would welcome it, and give an actual apology indicating her remorse, her willingness to work and I can assure you that there would be some reconsideration of by members, because then there would be the commitment from that particular member who took the oath that she is committed, or he is committed to the oath of office above all things and that the highest priority they have is to protect and defend the United States of America, its people, and of course her constituents or his constituents in their congressional district. That has not happened. No, this is not personal. It is not partisan. And it would apply to anyone who chose to behave in such a manner that we have seen over the last couple of weeks.”
She also spoke about Qanon which she says has no place in the United States Congress: “Well you could look at this biblically and all of us have heard the stories of false profits. And it's been said often in different faiths about people coming and presenting stark lies and trying to seek to divide the American people and have the American people follow this misinformation. This is more than this information. I think the American people need to understand, the better direction would have been for Kevin McCarthy to have done his duty and to have removed her by way of the Republican conference, to be able to have oversight over your own members, and putting the nation, the flag, our beliefs in the constitution above any sort of adherence or allegiance to a deposed and former president Donald Trump. That did not happen. And so as custodians of the constitution, Democrats in the majority, have to show not only the nation, but the world that you cannot get away with sleight of hand. Coming to the floor to try to get explanation, but not coming to the floor and trying to give an apology. To recognize that your allegation, that Democrats sexually attack babies or eat babies, that you said that you wanted to shoot the Speaker of the House in the head, that all Democrats are sexual predators, that as you said, 9/11 did not exist, that school shootings have been made up and it's mostly actors. And you're talking about the families of the children of Sandy Hook, the children in South Florida, the children in my district at Santa Fe High School, at Columbine. I go way back to the students at Virginia Tech, all of these places where people lost lives in mass shootings.. No, Qanon has no place in the United States congress as a policy, as a philosophy and, and seriously has a potential violent threat to the wellbeing of members of the United States congress who are there constitutionally to do their duty.”
