On Friday, January 8, 2021, Congressman Al Green – as the Member who brought three sets of articles of impeachment to a vote on the House floor in 2017, 2018, and 2019 with the support of over 100 different Members – held a press conference to discuss impeachment options. Congressman Green’s efforts laid the foundation for the successful impeachment of President Trump on December 18, 2019.
Congressman Al Green stated, “Our country is in a crisis induced by its commander-in-chief. His rhetoric – not only on January 6 to a throng of his supporters but over the last four years – has incited hate, harassment, and violence that is threatening national security and the safety of the American public.”
“We cannot allow the weaponization of hate to continue to be an organizing tool and mobilizing tool for elections. The insurrection at the Capitol was a glaring look at what happens when hate is weaponized and used to organize hatemongers. President Trump’s weaponization of hate has brought undue suffering to a multitude of marginalized groups.”
“Jews have suffered because of the President saying there were fine people among the hatemongers in Charlottesville. Muslims have suffered because of the President’s efforts to ban them from entering the country. LGBTQ+ persons have suffered because of the President’s efforts to ban them from the military. Black people have suffered because of the President’s belief that the principle of Black Lives Matter is a symbol of hate.”
Congressman Green continued, “The President’s consistent weaponization of hate fueled the flame of confusion that laid the foundation for the insurrection that occurred on Wednesday, January 6 at the Capitol. We cannot view this date of infamy in isolation. We must assess his incitive words, deeds, and actions that led to the January 6, 2021 insurrection as well as their impact on the American people, especially those who have suffered from his hate. President Trump must be held accountable.”
“Impeachment provides a nation in turmoil with the opportunity to remove from office an impeachable president, who is abusing his power by causing harm to the public,” Congressman Green added. “Anticipating the transference of power on January 20 without immediately confronting President Trump’s incitive speech and behavior could only allow for more harm to our nation. The impeachment option is a must.”
