HOUSTON (July 21, 2021) – After 25 years of steadfast leadership, Legacy Community Health (Legacy) CEO Katy Caldwell will be retiring from her position with the organization on December 31, 2021.
Caldwell has been a driving force for Legacy. She began her journey as a volunteer for the Montrose Clinic, which later became Legacy Community Health, helping friends get the care they needed during the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980s. In 1996 she was hired as the Executive Director of the Montrose Clinic, which provided HIV/AIDS care out of a small house located on Westheimer Road.
Under Caldwell’s leadership, the organization grew exponentially, ultimately merging with the Assistance Fund in 2005 to become Legacy Community Health Services, Inc. Since then, Legacy became the largest federally qualified health center (FQHC) in the state of Texas and in the entire Southwest US, operating more than 40 clinics with more than 1300 employees across Houston, Baytown, Deer Park, and Beaumont.
A community health advocate and leader, Caldwell shepherded the organization into becoming a Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH), expanding services considerably to include health care both inside and outside of the exam room – without forgetting the agency’s roots in the region’s HIV community.
Under her vision, Legacy’s mission to drive health change in communities propelled it forward, providing equitable care for everyone regardless of ability to pay and free from judgement.
Legacy’s Board of Directors is conducting a nationwide search for Legacy’s next CEO. More details will be shared as the search progresses.
