Red Bull SoundClash Taking Place In Houston on December 2
Style Magazine Newswire | 10/28/2021, 3:18 p.m.
Red Bull announces the return of the Red Bull SoundClash concert series to the U.S., including its first-ever stop in Houston, Texas. After a decade of international domination, the live format returns this fall with shows stretching across four cities within three weeks, including a second tour stop on Thursday, December 2 at Houston’s Bayou Music Center (520 Texas Ave, 77002).
Red Bull SoundClash: The Suffers vs Tank and the Bangas will celebrate the art, culture, and musical genres of both headliners, while showcasing their abilities in a ‘Queens of Gulf Coast Soul’ themed four-round face-off featuring none other than two of the most talented female-led bands in the south. Representing Houston will be the ever-popular Gulf Coast Soul band The Suffers, while the award-winning R&B/funk/soul outfit Tank and the Bangas will be onsite to represent the city of New Orleans.
The concert event will feature co-hosts from each respective city, including Houston’s very own Paul Wall aka “The People’s Champ” alongside Big Freedia who hails from New Orleans and is commonly referred to as the “Queen of Bounce”. In true Red Bull SoundClash fashion, attendees can also expect several more surprise guests and familiar faces popping in from Texas and Louisiana’s iconic music scenes.
Tickets are on sale now at win.gs/RBSCHOUtix for only $30. All proceeds raised from the special one-night event will be donated to Houston-based nonprofit Angel By Nature in support of those impacted by Hurricane Ida that devastated communities in both Texas and Louisiana earlier this year. Founded in 2008 by award-winning hip-hop artist and philanthropist Trae Tha Truth, Angel By Nature is driven to help benefit and support the greater Houston community with relief efforts ranging from living conditions and education to personal health, motivation, and more.
“One of the most exciting things about this event, in particular, is that the concert will highlight original music from two accomplished southern bands, both of which are led by women of color, and will be filled with a diverse array of creative talent from some of the most iconic music cities in America. We can’t wait to put on this special showcase that helps to represent the personality of our band as well as the community at large here in Houston,” said Kam Franklin, lead singer of The Suffers.
The 2021 Red Bull SoundClash U.S. series kicks off in Atlanta on 11/30 with Shelley (fka D.R.A.M) vs Westside Boogie; followed by a stop in Houston on 12/2 with The Suffers vs Tank and The Bangas; then Nashville on 12/9 with Bren Joy vs Special Guest (TBA); before wrapping up on 12/15 in Chicago with Rico Nasty vs Danny Brown.
Red Bull SoundClash enables artists to push their musical boundaries through exploring music styles, battling, repertoires, and artist collaborations while empowering the audience to become more than spectators and decide the winner. The event will ultimately offer audiences and artists the chance to participate in a live music experience at concerts unlike any other while featuring two artists competing across two opposite stages with the audience located in the middle of the two stages to help to decide the night’s winner.
While these artists may be competing against each other over the course of four rounds, Red Bull SoundClash is ultimately a celebration of the power of live music, collaboration, and creative empowerment. See below for a detailed look at the competition:
Round No. 1 (Cover): Both bands play their own version of the same cover song
Round No. 2 (Takeover): Begins with the first band playing one of its original songs, although mid-way through the other band takes over while finishing the song in their own style
Round No. 3 (Clash): Highlights each band's musical versatility by performing songs in three different styles as determined by the DJ (ex: Electronic, Reggae, and Rock)
Round No. 4 (Finale): Features a ton of surprises as each act is allowed to bring on a special guest to join in on their final performance
