Last night, the 43rd annual BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival closed out it’s 2021 season with electrifying performances by New York indie-pop collective MICHELLE, Jazz vocalist Lady Blackbird and NOLA-native Jazz musician Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue, at the Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park.

The evening began as BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival’s Director of Performing Arts and Executive Producer, Lia Camille Crockett and Artistic Director Rachel Chanoff took the stage to greet the audience, spoke about the true sense of community instilled by the festival, and the success of the 2021 season. “It is special to be able to gather here,” said Crockett. “After everything we’ve been through this year, it was more vital than ever to have this festival be a place we could gather safely and joyfully. It is so good to close out the season with all of you.”

Following their welcome, the music began with New York indie-pop collective MICHELLE, who serenaded the audience with beautiful vocals and melodies. The group showcased their unique, dream-pop sound with renditions of “STUCK ON U” and “POSE.” As MICHELLE performed, the energy of the crowd steadily increased as they followed the set’s building momentum, which culminated in high-spirited performances of “UNBOUND” and “THE BOTTOM,” prompting joyous dancing among the audience.

Next on the lineup was the impressive Jazz vocalist Lady Blackbird, who held a powerful presence onstage. The songstress, who looked magnificent in a black outfit contrasting her stark white hair, displayed her absolutely incredible vocal skills during performances of songs “Blackbird,” “Fix It,” and a particularly striking rendition of Jefferson’s Airplane’s “White Rabbit.” The charismatic musician’s set was met with enormous applause from the audience, who were captivated from start to finish.

The headliner of the evening, NOLA-native Jazz musician Trombone Shorty and accompanying brass funk band Orleans Avenue, then took the stage in a spectacular fashion and were promptly met with loud cheers from the crowd. Bringing an authentic New Orleans vibe to Prospect Park, the collective’s riveting performance included renditions of hit songs, “Buckjump,” “On The Way Down,” and “Long Weekend.” Shorty’s immense skill was immediately apparent, as the musician’s trombone sang beautiful brass notes throughout the bandshell. The audience screamed in excitement and danced the night away, capping off another fantastic season of the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival.
