The Harris County Clerk’s Office (HCCO) served dozens of families and issued 200 birth certificates during its second annual Back-to-School Birth Certificate Saturday events. This program is dedicated to help families obtain the necessary records to enroll their children in school. So far, HCCO has issued almost 1,200 birth certificates this summer.

“I am a working parent and totally understand that this time of year can be stressful when you are rushing to get everything you need for back-to school,” said Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth. “That is why we opened our offices on two consecutives Saturdays to help families who do not have the time to visit us during regular business hours.”

This year, HCCO partnered with Judge Eric William Carter, Harris County Justice of the Peace for Precinct 1 and the Alpha Eta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. in partnership with Alpha Merit Group Educational Foundation, Inc. who donated funds to cover the cost of 50 birth certificates and backpacks for customers at the North Shepherd Annex during the Saturday, August 6th Back-to-School Birth Certificate event. Harris County Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia’s office and Harris County Constable Precinct 2 Jerry Garcia provided support at the event held at the Pasadena Annex on Saturday, July 30th.

“We are grateful for their partnership and hope to continue working with them and other community service organizations in the future,” concluded Clerk Hudspeth.

HCCO’s Back to School Birth Certificate Program was recently recognized by the International Association of Government Officials (iGO) and by the National Association of Counties (NACo) for providing innovative and effective government programs that strengthen services for residents.

This year, HCCO added an online ordering system that allows people to securely purchase birth certificates. The online service is especially helpful for customers who do not live in Harris County or simply do not have time to visit one of HCCO’s 11 locations.
