CAIR Joins Call to Remove ‘Shameful’ KKK Plaque from West Point

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today joined a call for the removal of a “shameful” plaque honoring the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) from the United States Military Academy at West Point.
The Naming Commission, a congressional panel tasked with reviewing and changing military assets that memorialize Confederate figures, has said that West Point should remove a plaque, which pays homage to the KKK, from the entrance of one of its campus buildings. Since the plaque is not linked to the Confederate army and therefore out of the commission’s jurisdiction, the commission said it would not officially call on the academy to remove it. The commission did call for the renaming of seven assets on West Point’s campus, five of which were named for General Robert E. Lee.

“The presence of a plaque honoring white supremacist terrorists on the campus of one of our nation’s top military academies is totally unacceptable and a national embarrassment,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We call on West Point officials to immediately remove this shameful plaque and for the Biden administration to intervene to make sure it is swiftly removed.”
He noted that earlier this year, CAIR welcomed the announced review of more than 750 “Department of Defense items,” include military bases, streets signs and bridges, to determine whether their names “commemorate the Confederacy.”
CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
