Ms. Longoria served our democracy and the voters of Harris County with integrity, transparency and innovation. I’m thankful for her service.
As we’ve seen through the years, running elections in Harris County is challenging under the best circumstances. Ms. Longoria faced the compounding challenges of administering elections with new technology amidst a pandemic while battling lawsuits filed to subvert our elections and implementing the state’s anti-voter laws that targeted Harris County’s efforts to increase voter participation.
I trust Beth Stevens, a proven voting rights expert and advocate, to lead the Election Administrator’s office on an interim basis until a new administrator is chosen. It’s up to all of us to serve in our elections and protect the right to vote in November because the stakes have never been higher for our democracy.
There are no sidelines. Anti-democracy forces are taking every page from the voter suppression playbook, and those who cherish our democracy have to leave everything on the field in defense of it.
