Charlene Ward Johnson is the new- ly elected trustee to the Houston Community College (HCC) Board of Trustees. She officially joined the college’s governing board as the trustee for District II following a brief swearing-in ceremony Wednesday, June 29, at 3100 Main St. in Houston.

Texas State Representative Jar- vis Johnson (District 139) administered the oath of office to the new trustee in a ceremony attended by U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, other distinguished guests, family and friends.

Trustee Johnson was elected to the HCC Board of Trustees following a runoff election held Saturday, June 18. She will fill the unexpired term in the single-member district through December 31, 2025.

Governing the nation’s fifth largest public community college system, members of the HCC governing board are elected to staggered six-year terms and serve without compensation.

Other HCC current board members include Dr. Cynthia Lenton-Gary, Chair, District VII; Monica Flores Richart, Vice Chair, District I; Eva Loredo, Secretary, District VIII; Dr. Adriana Tamez, District III; Dr. Reagan Flowers, District IV; Robert Glaser, District V; David Wilson, District VI; and Dr. Pretta VanDible Stallworth, District IX.

Johnson graduated from the University of Houston in 1991, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Technology. She received her Master of Arts degree in Organizational Management with a Specialization in Public Administration from the University of Arizona Global Campus in May 2021.

Johnson serves as vice president of the Greater Houston Frontiers, president of her neighborhood’s Civic Club, and president of the University of Houston Black Alumni Association.

She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Top Ladies of Distinction-Humble Intercontinental Chapter, and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Volunteer Committee.

Johnson volunteers, fundraises, and organizes numerous community events designed to enrich the lives of the people in the community. Her philanthropic endeavors for charities include the Gulf Coast Community Association, American Heart Association, March of Dimes, United Negro College Fund, Junior Achievement, Texas Black Expo, and Kids Meals.

She is a mother of two children and is a member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church.
