CAIR Welcomes Sentencing of Man Who Harassed, Threatened Black Staffer in Delaware Governor’s Office

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the sentencing of a Delaware man who repeatedly targeted a Black female employee in Gov. John Carney's office with racist and sexist slurs, including the N-word.
On July 1, Matthew Gregg, 27, the first person in Delaware convicted of a felony hate crime by the state's Division of Civil Rights and Public Trust, was sentenced to four months in prison followed by probation.
He will also be required to complete community service, anger management, and mental health and substance abuse counseling, according to the Department of Justice. Gregg was arrested in 2020 on charges of harassment and terroristic threatening.
In a statement, CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper said:
“Anyone convicted of a hate crime should face a penalty reflecting the seriousness of the crime and the negative impact on the victim and the community. A prison term for the first person convicted of a felony hate crime by the Attorney General's dedicated Division of Civil Rights and Public Trust will send a message to others contemplating such racist actions.”
Hooper noted that earlier this month, CAIR welcomed the arrest of a suspect for an allegedly anti-Asian attack in Portland, Ore. Yesterday, CAIR welcomed bias charges for another alleged anti-Asian road rage incident in Oregon on Friday.
He added that the American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Asian hate, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, antisemitism, white supremacy and all other forms of bigotry.
