Popular Texas restaurant, The Breakfast Klub, has replaced a mural of George Floyd on the side of its building with a new painting dubbed the “Black Mount Rushmore.” The mural includes images of Black luminaries who have had significant influence in the advancement of Black people in America and throughout the world. The artwork features Marcus Garvey, Carter G. Woodson, Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois.
The mural is the work of artist Reginald Adams, who, for the last decade, has created the large works of art on the side of the building that houses The Breakfast Klub, located on the corner of Travis and West Alabama in Midtown Houston. The image changes every two to three years, with previous pieces including murals of former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama.
This most recent work, the “Black Mount Rushmore,” was created off-site on several panels and affixed to the building, covering the George Floyd image. The art centers on men who were champions of civil rights, historians, orators, intellectuals, educators and leaders.
In a social media post, Adams said, “Black history is more than a month, and we are installing our latest statement to Black excellence, Black culture, leaders and innovators and the geniuses that helped form this country that oftentimes are underserved, overlooked and neglected.”
The Breakfast Klub is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary in business. In two decades, the restaurant has developed a reputation as a “can’t miss” destination for anyone visiting Houston. It has received national recognition from Pepsi, Good Morning America, USA Today, Black Enterprise, Esquire, and Forbes, among others. Most recently, The Breakfast Klub was named one of the highest-ranked Black-owned restaurants on Yelp.
