Celebrating the Fourth of July can be fun for the whole family, but the threat of fire lurks with every lit firework or grill. Here are some fire safety tips from First Alert to ensure you are prepared for the unexpected.

Have the Right Tools on Hand

July sees the highest amount of grill fires per month, according to the National Fire Protection Association. While firing up the grill for Fourth of July get togethers, prevent food-related fires by only grilling outside and keeping the grill away from the house, railings and foliage. Be sure children and pets stay away from the grill and supervise the grill when on. In case of emergency, keep a small, easy-to-use portable fire extinguishing device, like First Alert EZ Fire Spray, close by.

Protect Yourself Around the Fire Pit

Before you light your fire pit, check the weather forecast, as severe wind can make it difficult to light and could blow sparks into nearby foliage or buildings. Make sure to keep the fire out in the open and never underneath trees. At the end of your celebration, douse the remains of the fire in water to extinguish any remaining embers and ensure the fire is completely out.

Practice Sparkler Safety

If you choose to use sparklers, never point them directly at yourself or others. Always supervise children handling sparklers and keep a fire extinguisher and bucket of water nearby. In the case of a sustained burn, know what can be treated at home and what needs medical attention. First degree burns only impact the top layer of skin and can be treated with a cold compress and covered with a fresh bandage. Second- and third-degree burns beyond the top layer of skin should be treated by medical professionals. If you are unsure about the severity of a burn, seek medical attention.
