The Texas A&M University System has announced Prairie View A&M University alumna Serita Whiting as this year’s Student Veteran Excellence Award recipient. PVAMU is a member of TAMUS.
An Army veteran, Whiting served as president of the PVAMU Student Veteran Association for two years before graduating this past summer with a Ph.D. in philosophy with a concentration in juvenile justice.
“I am so excited to be the most recent recipient of the TAMU System’s Student Veteran Excellence Award,” Whiting said. “It was truly an honor to be president of the Prairie View A&M Student Veteran Association and support veterans both on and off campus,” she added.
Each year, the award is bestowed to a student veteran from one of The Texas A&M University System’s 11 universities, which includes more than 152,000 students. It’s someone who demonstrates service to the campus or community, exemplifies the core values of the campus or military services, and advocates for student veterans and veteran issues.
Whiting received a certificate and plaque, along with $250 that will go towards PVAMU’s veteran services office and the student veteran association.
“I am brainstorming the best way to utilize the prize for either expenses for an on-campus event or to purchase new t-shirts for the SVA,” Whiting commented. “It will all come down to what the organization really needs for the upcoming year.”
Whiting currently serves as an adjunct instructor in the Department of Administration of Justice at Texas Southern University.
