On Tuesday, October 18, 2022, Congressman Al Green released the following statement:
“I commend the Houston Area Women’s Center (HWAC) for the exemplary and necessary work it does to bring justice and change for victims of domestic violence. I also thank HWAC for granting me the opportunity to join them today and share more about my Original National Domestic Violence Awareness Month Resolution,” Congressman Al Green said. “I have introduced my Original National Domestic Violence Awareness Month Resolution since my arrival in Congress in 2005. This year will be no different. I humbly do this because domestic violence is an issue that spans the length and breadth of our nation while not discriminating based on age, gender, ethnicity, or religion. Thus, awareness must never cease to be raised.”
Congressman Al Green went on, “Although domestic violence is an issue that affects men as well, it predominantly affects women. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, one in four women and one in seven men ages 18 and older will experience domestic violence at some point in their life. As we move further into the month of October and continue observing Domestic Violence Awareness month, I urge everyone, especially men, to do their part by not only speaking out but also speaking up against intimate partner violence. Looking the other way can be more than acquiescence, it may be perceived as acceptance.”
