First Saturday Arts Market Welcomes New & Returning Artists

Houston’s original monthly outdoor art market returns for holiday shopping November 5, 2022 on the parking lot at 540 W. 19th St. The November edition features over 40 artists from the greater Houston area and Austin.
“Holiday shopping and the promise of cooler weather always maxes out the November and December markets,” market founder and manager Mitch Cohen said. “I’m excited new artists were able to join us for these popular markets, like art photographer Leslie Natale who turned her hobby of 15 years into a profession, this will be one of her first markets.”
“Wood craftsman Ron Martel calls himself The Yankee Woodturner and creates intricately turned bowls, vases and goblets, highlighting the unique nuances of each piece of wood,” Cohen said. “The holiday markets also bring out artists we don’t see often during the year such as Magnolia, TX. painter Dana Spencer. Dana’s paintings cover many subjects but her whimsical, colorfully style stands out, I love her barnyard animals and western scenes.”
Cohen, an artist and Heights resident, founded the market in 2004. The market has been on W. 19th St., since 2006 and today stands out as the only monthly, artist curated outdoor market.
“I’ve always been a huge fan of festivals but noticed a lack of regular events just for artists in 2003. So I just started a monthly market myself with the intention of selling my paintings too. My art took a back seat as the market grew in popularity and to this day I am humbled by the support of the Houston community and the artists that attend.”
First Saturday Arts Market has featured dozens of visual artists showcasing their work in the Historic Houston Heights since 2004. Visitors to this free event will find friendly artists with paintings, sculpture, photography, jewelry and many more popular art mediums. There is always a popular food truck on site and local singer/songwriters can often be found providing entertainment at the market.
The November also features Peppaz HTX Food Truck, serving chicken with a twist, offering a variety of sauces to toss with the chicken. A favorite of the artists. Houston’s first cidery and the Heights’ own Houston Cider Co., is always on site with their latest and popular ciders.
The Heights Fools on Stools, an acoustic vocal trio, are the featured musicians in November. They are Mike Spencer, Bette Channell and Al Henson.
