Boasting some of Verdi’s most wonderful melodies, La traviata is one of the best-loved operas in the repertory, with an influence that only continues to grow. Here are just three fun facts about one of the world’s most popular operas, La traviata:

Loosely inspired by La traviata, the 1990 movie Pretty Woman features a scene in which the characters attend a performance of the opera. You can hear parts of Violetta’s aria, “Sempre libera” and more.

Legendary designer Valentino sponsored his very first opera—La traviata at Teatro Dell’Opera di Roma—in 2017. He created all the costumes for the opera’s nearly sold out run, and it was a hit!

You could say La traviata made its first pop culture splash at its 1853 premiere! It was one of the first operas to be set in the composer’s own contemporary era, not a historical period.
