Below is Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis’s statement on a state district judge’s ruling to temporarily halt SB 1750 from becoming law.:
“I applaud today’s court ruling temporarily blocking SB 1750 from taking effect. The legislation targeting Harris County elections undermines the will of the people. We are on the front lines of a coordinated attack on our democracy because state leaders are afraid of Harris County voters’ power and diversity. Two years ago, the state banned Harris County innovations like drive-thru and 24-hour voting that were embraced by voters. This year the state escalated its assault by passing legislation that only affects Harris County and gives Texas leadership unprecedented power over our elections. Harris County voters can trust that we’re doing everything in our power to protect their right to vote in fair and free elections.”
