Houston Public Media has introduced a bold new Sunday programming lineup on News 88.7 designed to amplify diverse voices and tackle sensitive topics head-on. It’s the kind of “go beyond” programming that public media can uniquely provide to expand listeners’ perspectives and stimulate new conversations and ways of thinking.
This recently launched Sunday evening programming bundle brings Greater Houston’s radio and streaming listeners a vibrant collection of stories, insights and opinions from voices as diverse as the community. From the day’s hottest political issues affecting Black women to the most intimate functions of the human body, the new Sunday lineup is designed to wrap up the week by expanding listener horizons in new directions.
“This Sunday lineup reflects our commitment to sparking meaningful conversations in our community,” said Lisa Shumate, associate vice president and general manager of Houston Public Media. “We want to give our listeners unprecedented access to local, regional and national content that is meaningful, informative and thought-provoking. As the world changes rapidly around us, we believe that amplifying voices and experiences that listeners might not hear elsewhere can deepen our understanding of each other, which has never been more important.”
Here are the programs News 88.7 listeners and streamers will now find on Sunday evenings:
Notes from America with Kai Wright (5 pm) An award-winning journalist, advocate, host, and show managing editor, Kai and guests explore the unfinished business of our history and its grip on our future.
Our Body Politic (6 pm) Hosted by award-winning journalist Farai Chideya, this show reports unapologetically on the major political events of today from the perspective of women of color and how they are impacted by these developments.
Latino USA (7 pm), the foremost Latino voice in public media, has been reporting on Latino news and culture since 1992. Hosted by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa, Latino USA brings a depth of experience, on-the-ground connections and knowledge of current and emerging issues impacting Latinos and other people of color.
Embodied (8 pm) - Sex and relationships are intimate and sometimes intimidating to talk about. In this award-winning podcast, host Anita Rao breaks new ground in the exploration of our brains and our bodies that sometimes touches down in taboo territory.
I SEE U with Eddie Robinson (9 pm) Hosted by Houston Public Media's own veteran broadcaster Eddie Robinson, I SEE U explores cultural identity through the stories of people and places that have been transformed by the effects of long-standing biases.
“We know that listeners from underrepresented groups want content that is by them as well as for them,” said Shumate. “Providing a platform for their voices is an important role for public media.”
Shumate said that since the new programming was launched, listener feedback has been very supportive.
