On Wednesday, February 1, 2023, Congressman Al Green released the following statement:

“Following the brutal footage released last week of the killing of Tyre Nichols, we mourn the loss of Tyre – yet another unarmed Black man whose life was unjustly taken by a group of police officers and their deadly use of excessive force. The officers who killed Tyre not only committed a heinous act, but also betrayed the trust of people of goodwill who worked tirelessly to diversify police departments across the country,” Congressman Al Green said.

“While incidents of police misconduct like the one that took Tyre’s life have sadly become too pervasive and normalized, it does not change the fact that they remain an injustice. To eradicate these injustices, however, our justice system needs reform and our nation needs healing. To achieve both, we must first reconcile the conscious as well as unconscious biases that engender impressions that become injustices. Ensuring that the officers who killed Tyre are properly punished is also an essential step toward obtaining that healing,” Congressman Al Green concluded. “Today especially, as Tyre’s funeral is underway in Memphis, I hope that his death will serve as a reminder to all Americans of the need to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act because injustices should not and cannot be justified. Enough is enough.”
