On Monday, January 16, 2023, Fort Bend County Judge KP George, Chef Chris Williams’ Lucille’s 1913 Foundation, and the city of Kendleton, TX, will honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., by hosting a Day of Service tree planting and produce distribution from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., at Bates M. Allen Park, 630 Charlie Roberts Ln., in Kendleton, TX 77451.

Kendleton residents, community leaders, and elected officials will take part in planting fruit trees and herbs in Kendleton’s Community Garden, established in 2022 by Lucille’s 1913, to combat food insecurity in the area and provide the community with a self-sustainable and accessible food source. Produce harvested from the garden will source the food distribution.

“The community garden that we opened last year has been a powerful contributor to building a healthy and cohesive community while repurposing land into attractive spaces where both people and plants can flourish,” said KP George. “Dr. King believed in the power of individuals serving in strengthening communities, and that is what we have established in this community, and that is what we are continuing to do here.”

Established by emancipated slaves after the American Civil War, Kendleton is located in western Fort Bend County, TX, and is home to 327 residents with a total area of 1.1 square miles.

The Kendleton Community Garden was made possible as part of a collaboration with Fort Bend County and Lucille’s 1913, a non-profit that is part of the larger Lucille’s Hospitality Group.
