Following a vote by union delegates, the Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation, AFL-CIO today announced their endorsement of John Whitmire for Houston Mayor.

Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation Executive Director Hany Khalil said, “John Whitmire won his first race campaigning out of the Ceole Speight AFL-CIO hall in Houston, and he’s been a steadfast ally of labor ever since. Even though much has changed in the subsequent 50 years, John has been a labor champion in the Texas Senate and is a union member himself. We know John Whitmire will be a strong advocate for working families, and we’re proud to stand with him today.”

The Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation has an extensive endorsement process, requiring all candidates seeking labor’s endorsement to fill out a detailed questionnaire, meet with unions, and answer challenging questions. For early endorsements, candidates are required to obtain the support of at least 80% of affiliated unions.

The Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation (TGCALF), AFL-CIO unites the power of 95 unions across 13 counties to advocate for working families in the Texas Gulf Coast, including over 45,000 workers in Houston.
