Sorority members said books by and for African Americans had to be included. So, Alpha Xi Omega Chapter would purchase books!

Since 2021, we had provided contributions and hands-on service to the Parkland Foundation, African American Museum, Catholic Charities of Dallas, United Nations Association, USA – Dallas Chapter, Aunt Bette’s Pantry, Dallas Black Dance Theatre, Refugee Services of Texas, Paul Quinn College, North Texas Food Bank, City of Dallas Park and Recreation Department, Juanita Craft House, Dallas ISD, Dallas Historical Society, For Oak Cliff, and many Dallas shelters that assisted with homelessness, foster care, and domestic violence.

Celebrating 94 years of service to the southern Dallas community, members of the Alpha Xi Omega Chapter ensured that area libraries would be equipped with books by and about African Americans by donating $8,000 to four selected Dallas Public Libraries: Polk-Wisdom Branch, West Dallas Branch, MLK Branch, and the Forest Green Branch Libraries on June 23, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. in the Flag Room at Dallas City Hall.

ABOUT ALPHA XI OMEGA CHAPTER

Alpha Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was established in Dallas, Texas, on June 6, 1929. Mrs. Florence Harlee Phelps, a Howard University graduate, initiated the effort to establish a chapter of the first Greek letter sorority for African American women in her hometown. From its beginning, the chapter continuously gave college scholarships to Dallas students. Other programs included vocational counseling and guidance for high school students, health and other social service initiatives for women and children, support of the African American family, and support for developing art, cultural, and educational institutions and groups. Veteran educators, including chapter members Shirley R. Fisher and Shirley Ison-Newsome, along with U.S. House Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson, had long championed the cause for a more inclusive and progressive education and health system. As members of the 115-year-old international organization geared up to host its Boule in Dallas with an expectation of more than 20,000 attendees, many of them educators, social workers, and healthcare providers, combating the banning of books would definitely be on the agenda. The women of Alpha Kappa Alpha cared about making this world a better place, and they knew that a miseducated population did not help anyone. nstead of banning books and defunding programs that promoted literacy, everyone should have supported fairness, balance, and accuracy. It was important to note that the AKA's International Supreme Basileus (President) Danette Anthony Reed lived in the Metroplex and worked closely with the members of other organizations around the world.

As Alpha Xi Omega Chapter celebrated 94 years, it was poised and ready to deliver even greater service to underserved Dallas residents. This large group of exceptionally talented, college-educated African American women was committed to serving humankind and improving the quality of life for all.
