Holocaust Museum Houston (HMH) invites the community to enjoy free admission on Human Rights Day, Sunday, December 10, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Museum’s Lester and Sue Smith Campus, located at 5401 Caroline Street. Generously presented by Perry Homes Foundation, visitors can commemorate Human Rights Day by exploring the Museum's bilingual (English and Spanish) galleries, engaging in family-friendly programming, and attending a compelling Holocaust Survivor talk.
The complimentary admission includes access to HMH’s impactful galleries, featuring exhibitions on Holocaust, Human Rights, Diaries, and the highlighted display, "Holodomor: The Famine-Genocide of Ukraine 1932-1933." Guests can delve into the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, discovering stories of human rights heroes like Dolores Huerta, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malala Yousafzai, Elie Wiesel, Harvey Milk, and others in the Lester and Sue Smith Human Rights Gallery.
Local human rights organizations, including The Alliance, Texas Trans Legal Aid, US Committee for Ukrainian Holodomor Genocide Awareness, ADL, and T.E.J.A.S., will host informative booths onsite, with special programming scheduled throughout the day.
The Albert and Ethel Herzstein Theater will be the venue for a talk with Holocaust Survivor Ruth Steinfeld at 1:00 p.m. Following this, a children’s magic show featuring 2nd generation Holocaust Survivor Hy Penn, also known as “The Great Hydini,” will take place at 2:00 p.m.
Human Rights Day, observed annually on December 10, marks the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. This groundbreaking document proclaims 30 inalienable rights that every human being is entitled to, irrespective of factors such as race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status. Translated into more than 500 languages, the UDHR stands as the most translated document globally.
