Houston Style Magazine's readers were recently treated to an enchanting holiday spectacle as the 33rd Annual Wortham Tree Lighting Ceremony unfurled in a symphony of lights, music, and Nutcracker fantasy. This cherished Houston tradition, nestled in the heart of downtown at Fish Plaza, sparkled with the old-world charm of 'The Nutcracker', combined with modern, immersive experiences designed for the social media savvy.

On November 22nd, from the cozy confines of Wortham Theater Center's lobby to the transformed wintry wonderland of Sugar Plum Plaza, the community gathered to witness the lighting of the majestic Christmas tree. Adorned with over 19,000 twinkling lights, the tree served as a luminous beacon, drawing families into a world of holiday cheer. The air, crisp with festive chill, was filled with the sounds of the Jalen Baker Trio, the melodious voices from Houston Grand Opera's Butler Studio, and the classical tunes of Mercury Chamber Orchestra, all contributing to a vibrant soundscape of joy.

Children, wide-eyed with wonder, met and photographed with the iconic characters of 'The Nutcracker', while Santa Claus himself held court, ready to hear the seasonal wishes of every visitor. The day was a perfect prelude to Houston Ballet's upcoming 'Nutcracker' performances, setting the stage for the holiday classic.

Shopping enthusiasts found delight in the arts and crafts market, while the youngest visitors reveled in storytime sessions. Outside, interactive installations like life-sized hourglasses and giant time catchers, courtesy of Creos, invited guests to manipulate light and sound, crafting their own moments of magic. The Harmonies music box art installation provided a whimsical backdrop for family photos, cementing memories of the day.

The event, free and welcoming to all, was not only a testament to Houston's vibrant community spirit but also a gateway to the broader festivities of City Lights Downtown Holiday Magic. With Sugar Plum Plaza as one of the eleven holiday villages, the joy of the season is set to extend until the end of the year, promising ongoing merriment for all who wander into downtown Houston.

As the Nutcracker Prince and Sugar Plum Fairy aided Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner in lighting the Christmas tree, the spirit of the community shone as brightly as the lights themselves. This annual festival not only heralded the start of Houston's holiday season but also underscored the city's commitment to arts, culture, and communal harmony. Houston Style Magazine takes pride in capturing these moments, ensuring that the magic of the Wortham Tree Lighting remains a glowing highlight of the city's cultural calendar.
