The Harris County Flood Control District has completed construction of the second phase of a stormwater detention basin in the Sims Bayou watershed that will provide approximately 94 acre-feet of stormwater detention storage, or the equivalent of 31 million gallons of stormwater.

The project, located south of the intersection of Crenshaw Road and Shaver Street just east of Galveston Road, was an expansion of an existing stormwater detention basin in the area and adds additional flood mitigation for Berry Bayou tributary C106-08-00.

The first phase of the project was completed in 2015 and the second phase started construction in Summer 2022. The approximately $6.7 million basin expansion project reduces the risk of flooding for more than 130 structures in the Arlington Heights subdivision. The project was constructed in partnership with the City of Houston who funded the cost of property acquisition, design, and construction of the improvements.

“I’m pleased that the Crenshaw Stormwater Detention Basin in the Sims Bayou Watershed is now complete,” said Adrian Garcia, Precinct 2 Commissioner. “As part of my Revive2Thrive initiative, this flood prevention project helps reduce flooding risks during rain events for residents who live in subdivisions like Arlington Heights. My goal with Revive2Thrive is to make sure the right investments are being made across Precinct 2 and that flood mitigation remains at the forefront of our county-wide priorities.''
