On Friday, October 27, 2023, Congressman Al Green will present a symbolic check for $9,886,000 for the federal funding that the Harris County Flood Control District will receive for the South Post Oak Stormwater Detention Basin and Channel Conveyance Improvements Project. These funds will benefit the much-needed stormwater management efforts in Harris County. A check presentation will take place at 5220 Fuqua Gardens View, Houston, Texas, 77045.
As outlined on the Harris County Flood Control District’s website, this project encompasses a range of essential components to alleviate flooding due to stormwater. Some renovations include channel improvements along Sims Bayou, the expansion of retention storage volume, bridge crossing replacements, and modifications. One of the key phases of this project involves the deepening and widening of the stream, extending from the Sam Houston Tollway to its connection with Sims Bayou. These efforts will reduce the risk of flooding for residents and minimize the regulatory floodplain’s footprint to preserve Sims Bayou and the natural environment.
“This project is a perfect example of the power of partnerships as we work together to increase flood resilience for more than 150 homes and businesses,” said Dr. Tina Petersen, Executive Director of the Flood Control District. “We are grateful to Congressman Green for his support, which allows us to leverage funds from the 2018 Flood Control Bond Program along with funding from the Texas Water Development Board and additional potential funding from the Community Development Block Grant program. Together, we’re making a huge impact for this area.”
“All of our residents deserve a safe, strong, and resilient Harris County for themselves and their children, regardless of their wealth or their ZIP Code. Yet, flooding events always fall disproportionately on people of color and low-income communities. This project in the Hiram Clarke area is part of our commitment to righting those historical wrongs. Thanks to the work of the Harris County Flood Control District and the support of Congressman Al Green, the South Post Oak Detention Basin will now retain 332 million gallons of excess stormwater, lifting many homes out of the 100-year floodplain. I applaud Congressman Green for his advocacy and incredible support to help make this project a reality,” stated Rodney Ellis, Harris County Commissioner.
Congressman Al Green stated, “Pooling our resources allows us to safeguard homes, preserve the environment, and enhance the quality of life for everyone in Houston. This is a fundamental step forward both for Harris County’s fight against future flooding and our collective commitment to safety.”
