A 66-year-old man from Houston was handed a 25-year prison sentence without parole on Tuesday for sexually abusing children, as announced by Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg.

“This man repeatedly abused and victimized children without a second thought to the pain and damage he was inflicting,” stated Ogg. “It seems clear that justice demands that he spend the rest of his life in prison.”

Identified as Sherman Lee Johnson, 66, he admitted guilt to continuous sexual abuse of a child for assaulting a young girl from 2009 to 2020, prompting the girl to notify authorities. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office took action, leading to Johnson's arrest.

Johnson, known to the victim's family, exploited his status as an older, trusted individual to prey on the girl and other victims.

With a history of repeat offenses dating back to a rape conviction in 1977, Johnson was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Tim Goodwin and Jarell Gibson from the DA’s Crimes Against Children Division.

“Parents and families have to stay ever vigilant about who they can trust because there are predators like this who hide among us in plain sight,” said Goodwin. “This is a just result because the defendant will have to serve every day of the 25-year sentence with no chance at parole.”
