Lifetime is continuing its successful partnership with GRAMMY® Award winner, two-time Academy Award® nominee, and Golden Globe nominee Mary J. Blige with three new original films, extending her previous deal that produced Real Love, Strength of a Woman, and Family Affair. The first of these new films, Mary J. Blige Presents Be Happy, is a collaboration between Blige’s Blue Butterfly Productions and Mona Scott-Young’s Monami Productions, produced alongside Motion Entertainment and Swirl Films.
The television film marks the directorial debut of Academy Award®-nominated actress Gabourey Sidibe (Precious, Give Me Back My Daughter), who brings Cameron J. Ross’ (The Summer I Turned Pretty) script to life. The film stars NAACP Image Award winners Tisha Campbell and Mekhi Phifer, along with SAG Award nominee Russell Hornsby, and premieres Saturday, February 7 at 8/7c as part of Lifetime’s Winter 2026 Love of a Lifetime slate.
Mary J. Blige Presents Be Happy follows 50-year-old Val (Tisha Campbell), a devoted wife and stay-at-home mom navigating the challenges of an empty nest. As her youngest child leaves for college, Val struggles with loneliness and distance in her marriage to Ross (Russell Hornsby). A spontaneous trip to New Orleans to support her pregnant daughter Kayla (Zing Ashford) reignites her passions and introduces her to Peter Mosley (Mekhi Phifer), a photographer who sees her in a new light. The story explores themes of reinvention, intimacy, and the transformative choices that define midlife, asking whether it is ever too late to choose oneself and the love one truly deserves.
The film joins Lifetime’s roster of movies inspired by Mary J. Blige’s iconic music, which collectively reached more than 6.1 million total viewers on linear television. Through Blue Butterfly Productions, Blige serves as executive producer, joined by Bruce Miller and Milana Edwards Brooks as co-producers. Mona Scott-Young and Angela White also produce, while Nick Roses, Mychael G. Chinn, Stephanie R. Gayle, and Michael Lang serve as executive producers for Monami Productions. Chet Fenster executive produces for Motion Entertainment and Eric Tomosunas for Swirl Films.
Mary J. Blige Presents Be Happy continues Lifetime’s tradition of combining star power, compelling storytelling, and music-inspired narratives to captivate audiences nationwide.
