In a major milestone for healthcare in the region, HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest has been named a 2026 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ recipient by Healthgrades, placing the hospital among the top 10% nationwide for patient safety.

The recognition highlights the hospital’s continued commitment to delivering safe, patient-centered care. This marks the fourth consecutive year, from 2023 through 2026, that the facility has earned the distinction, reinforcing its reputation as a leader in quality care across the Houston area.

In addition to the patient safety honor, HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest was recently recognized as one of America’s 250 Best Hospitals for overall clinical care. The hospital has also received multiple accolades for its performance in key specialties, including prostate surgery, gastrointestinal care, and surgical services. These honors reflect a broader commitment to providing compassionate, individualized care throughout every stage of the patient experience.

Hospital leadership emphasized that patient safety remains a top priority. CEO Joel North credited the achievement to the dedication of physicians, nurses, and staff who work daily to ensure high-quality outcomes for patients.

The award is based entirely on patient outcomes. Healthgrades evaluated risk-adjusted complication and mortality rates across approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide. Their analysis found notable differences between top-performing hospitals and lower-performing facilities, underscoring the importance of choosing providers with strong safety records.

Data from 2022 to 2024 revealed more than 167,000 preventable safety events among Medicare patients in U.S. hospitals. However, patients treated at award-winning facilities like HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest experienced significantly lower risks of common complications. These include a 52.4% lower likelihood of in-hospital falls resulting in fractures, a 57.5% reduced risk of collapsed lungs related to procedures, a 71.9% decrease in hospital-acquired pressure sores, and a 67.8% lower chance of catheter-related bloodstream infections.

Healthgrades continues to provide data-driven insights to help consumers make informed decisions about their care, emphasizing that where patients are treated can have a meaningful impact on outcomes.
