Cupertino finally folded — but not in the way Apple critics have been predicting for years.
Apple has officially introduced iPhone Duo, the company’s first foldable iPhone and one of the boldest redesigns of its flagship product since the original iPhone changed mobile technology nearly two decades ago. For a company famous for waiting until it believes a category is ready for its particular brand of polish, the message is unmistakable: Apple did not rush into the foldable race. It arrived intending to reshape it.
At first glance, iPhone Duo looks like Apple took two familiar ideas — the pocketable iPhone and the expansive tablet-like screen — and convinced them to share one titanium body. Closed, users get a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR outer display designed for comfortable one-handed use. Open it, and the device reveals a 7.6-inch folding Super Retina XDR display, Apple’s largest iPhone screen ever. Both displays support ProMotion, Always-On technology and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.

Later this year, Apple says iPhone Duo will support Apple Pencil with USB-C, giving note-takers, artists, executives and creators another reason to unfold their phones instead of reaching for a tablet.
Under the titanium exterior sits Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, built on a 2-nanometer process and paired with a custom vapor chamber for sustained performance. Apple says the new processor delivers faster CPU and graphics performance while supplying substantially more horsepower for on-device artificial intelligence. That matters because iPhone Duo arrives alongside iOS 27, Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI experience, which is designed to better understand personal context, onscreen information and natural conversation.
Apple iPhone Duo Siri AIThe fold is not simply cosmetic. Apple has redesigned iOS to take advantage of it. Split View lets users place two apps side by side on an iPhone for the first time, while the larger display can accommodate richer multitasking, two Safari windows, saved app pairs and Siri conversations alongside whatever is already on screen. It is the sort of productivity upgrade that could make the Duo especially attractive to business owners, journalists, photographers and Houston’s always-moving class of multitaskers.
Then there are the cameras. Apple equips iPhone Duo with a 48MP Fusion Main camera and 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera, plus a 12MP Center Stage front camera and an under-display FaceTime camera. The folding design introduces clever features including Duo Preview, which lets subjects see themselves on the outer display while someone photographs them, and Smart Take, which can recognize when everyone appears ready and automatically capture the moment. For parents, Kid Cue can even display Peanuts animations to persuade little eyes to look toward the camera — perhaps Apple’s most technologically advanced solution yet to the ancient family-photo problem.
Durability, the perennial question surrounding foldables, received serious engineering attention. The Duo uses grade 5 titanium, Ceramic Shield protection, a hinge assembled from more than 100 components and an IP68 splash-, water- and dust-resistance rating. Apple says the inner display combines protective coatings, high-strength glass, specialized adhesives and a titanium support plate to manage repeated folding stress.
Battery engineering is equally unconventional. One battery sits on each side of the phone and operates as a unified system. Apple rates the Duo for up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display and up to 44 hours on the outer display. Fast wired charging can bring it to about 50 percent in roughly 20 minutes.
And then comes the premium-price reality check. iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB, climbing to $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB and $3,199 for 2TB. It will be offered in Star White and Night Sky. Preorders begin October 16 at 5:00 a.m. Pacific, with availability beginning October 23.
For Apple, this is more than another annual iPhone refresh. The company that helped turn the smartphone into the world’s most important personal computer is now asking customers to reconsider what shape that computer should take.
The iPhone has officially entered the fold — and Apple appears determined to make folding feel unmistakably iPhone.
