The Executive Leadership Council (ELC) announced today that it will honor Brenda J. Lauderback with the prestigious 2022 Alvaro L. Martins Heritage Award during its 2022 Annual ELC Recognition Gala on Thursday, October 6, 2022 at the Marriot Marquis in Washington, D.C., at 6:00 p.m. ET. The gala will be hosted by Entertainment Tonight's Kevin Frazier and will include performances by Babyface and DJ Jazzy Jeff.

A Question of Justice

In 1838, in a shameful chapter of American history, U.S. forces under Gen. Winfield Scott forced tens of thousands of Cherokee Indians - one of the "Five Civilized Tribes" that had embraced the customs and language of white settlers - to march 1,200 miles to what was designated "Indian Territory" across the Mississippi (centered in what is now Oklahoma). Their lands were confiscated; their homes looted. Along what became known as the Trail of Tears, whooping cough, typhus, dysentery, and starvation took a deadly toll, with an estimated one-quarter of the Cherokee people perishing along the way.

When people of color went out to discover more for themselves in the early 1920s, there weren’t a lot of open doors but closed ones. Opportunities were few, and there weren’t many individuals with extended hands to show them the way. However, a courageous few found opportunity tucked away in the heart of Third Ward at a place to be called Texas Southern University.
