Photography by Vicky Pink - On Thursday, August 8, 2013, Houston Style Magazine was on hand at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center as Houston Independent School District made a major announcement. HISD’s Energized for STEM Academy, Inc. announced the creation of the first U. S. Marine Corps JROTC program in district history. The U.S. Marine Corps has committed $1 million to help fund the program's first five years. Some in attendance for this announcement were HISD Board of Education Trustee Paula Harris, U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, State Rep. Alma Allen, Houston City Council Members Wanda Adams and Larry Green, U.S. Marine Corps JROTC Program Director Dr. Bill McHenry, Marine Corps Staff Member Lt. Jerome Stovall, E-STEM Academy students in Marine Corps cadet uniforms, and E-STEM parents and community members.
