Photography by Donnie Lewis and Robert Watkins - On July 3-6, 2014, Houston Style Magazine was on hand in New Orleans, LA for the party with a purpose, Essence Festival. Celebrating their 20th anniversary, the festival out did itself with 20 stages of entertainment and empowerment with more than 80 artists. Just as he did for the 10th festival anniversary, Prince made a triumph return for a performance so amazing the festival got a new name, Purple Essence. While the music lit up the night, powerful words from 150 of the country’s most inspiring speakers ruled the day. Festival-goers shattered previous attendance records with more than 550,000 at this year festivities. New for this year were innovative new Essence Festival programs, including Empower U, a new series of free workshops covering every aspect of life from Love & Relationships to Healthy Living to personal finance; and the first-ever #YesWeCode Hack-A-Thon in partnership with Prince and the Rebuild the Dream Innovation Fund's Van Jones building new technologies for local businesses in New Orleans.
