Photography by Vicky Pink On Thursday, October 30, 2014, Houston Style Magazine was on hand at the Hilton Americas Hotel for the 2014 NAACP Houston Branch’s Freedom Fund Gala. The year’s gala marked the 96th anniversary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Houston Branch under the theme “NAACP: Justice and Equality for All.” This year’s event was the Year of the Woman and several extraordinary women were recognized. Audrey Lawson was honored with the Mickey Leland Humanitarian Award. Karen Jackson and Sharon Owens were given the President’s Award. State Senator and candidate for Texas Governor Wendy Davis was the keynote speaker. Grammy Award winning Gospel singer Yolanda Adams accompanied by the Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church choir was the featured entertainment. Some in attendance were Rev. Reginald Lillie, Yolanda Smith, Pastor Suzette Caldwell, Mrs. Howard Jefferson, Dr. James Douglas, Dr. John Ogletree, Carol Mims Galloway, Judy Foston, Wash Allen, Congressman Al Green, Shawntell McWilliams, Phyllis Bailey, Kelly Hodges, Rev. William A. Lawson, State Rep. Sylvester Turner, Cary and Clarease Yates, Judson Robinson, Dr. Elwyn & Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, State Rep. Senfronia Thompson, John Guess, Melanie Lawson, Argentina James, Linda Lorelle, Wanda Adams, Ben & Saundra Hall, and Judge Ursula Hall.
